One of the most popular of Tibetan religious personage is the mystic, jester, Milarepa. Also a poet and musician had as a young man renounced his worldly ways of wealth and sorcery to become a hermit and ascetic. Apprenticed to an austere tantric master named Marpa, he was given the task of endlessly building and tearing down a tower to prove his sincerity and to purge him of his former sins. Finally, Marpa convinced of his devotion initiated Milarepa and sent him away to live the life of a wandering contemplative.

The basic structure of Milarepa's famous tower still stands at Sekargutok in the Lhodrak region close to the Bhutanese border, and is a popular pilgrimage destination for local Tibetans. To enter this scenic and little visited area famous for its distinctive architecture and abundant flora and wildlife, we pass through the Yarlung Valley to Tsomi and move along the Tamshui River. From close near Bhutan, we follow the Lhodrak River to the Sekargutok Monastery and the nearby tower. The last leg of our journey takes us over the Manda La and past Pomo Lake to Langkartse, Gyantse, Shigatse and our return to Lhasa via the Northern Road.

In all we trek for a total of five days on foot and traverse 'off the beaten track' trails by vehicle to take in an all round picture of this remarkable region.
