There are three main routes to Everest from the north, which can be roughly classified as easy, medium, and difficult.. The first route follows the new road constructed for climbing expeditions, and is the least interesting in terms of landscape. The last route comes up from the Kharta and Karma valleys and leads to the 'Kangshun' East face. The spectacular trail crosses several passes in the 5,500 metre range and offers unbeatable views of Makalu, Lhotse, and Everest. It is a tough route and requires 12 days of walking.

The version offered here is a good compromise between the other routes, and because we can hire yaks for all our gear easily in Rabchu, we will be free to enjoy the superb mountain scenery along the way. We pass remote Tibetan villages and isolated valleys green with summer barley, to the highest monastery in the world; Rongpu Gompa, at the foot of Everest. At Base Camp we meet with some of the climbing teams and explore the Rongpu Glacier with the help of our experienced Tibetan guides.

The two and a half days in Lhasa give us enough time to cover the major sites, and our journey south through the old province of U-Tsang will allow us to stop off at the main points of interest without feeling rushed. We stop for an evening at Dhulakhel in Nepal to admire the Himalaya for the first time from the south, and then continue on to Kathmandu the following morning, where we have included one extra 'safety' day when the group can thoroughly relax before flying home.
