Our
route covers a very large part of the old Tibetan provinces of Kham and Amdo, and offers a
side of Tibet which is rarely seen on other programmes. It is based on two of the great
journeys that the French mystic and adventurer, Alexandra David-Neel made in 1918 and 1921
during the course of her life long fascination with the Tibetan Plateau.
From Chengdu we drive west along
the old tea route to Dartsedo, the historic gateway to Tibet and strategic junction town
for the caravans that ply the route to this day. From here we bare north towards the
important trading centre of Jeykundo, where Alexandra spent an entire winter. En route we
visit Kanze monastery, currently the largest monastic institution in Kham, and Dzokchen
monastery, seat of the most prominent tradition within the Nyingma or 'Red Hat' order. We
cross the 5,000 metre Bayankala pass into Amdo and skirt the wild Golok Grasslands in the
shadow of the Amnye Machin Range, picking up Alexandra's trail again by the blue waters of
Koknor Lake.We visit Kumbum, where she lived and studied for three years, and then go on
to visit Labrang, which together with Kumbum, is regarded as one of the five great Yellow
Hat Monasteries on the entire Tibetan Plateau.
Overall, the programme is an
ideal opportunity to experience the depth and breadth of these old Tibetan regions within
a limited framework of time.
