This is an unusual circuit which takes in the highpoints of the old province of Amdo, promising on the one hand remarkable encounters with the men and beasts who populate the remote elevated pasturelands of the Changtang, and on the otherhand, the ancient civilizations that have settled the surrounding valleys. We travel to the legendary Kokonor and spend a night on her shores to admire the serene beauty of this great lake, and then cross a high, sparsely populated region of distant mountains, sprawling lakes and dry semi desert where camels and Yaks can be seen grazing side by side. We journey south to the twin lakes of Kyaring and Noring, from where a caravan of Yaks carries our gear while we mount the sturdy Amdo horses which for centuries have been the mainstay of nomadic life here. We ride on for a whole week exploring the source of the mighty Yellow River, camping out with the nomads, and enjoying the abundant variety of wildlife.

Our return journey takes us first to Rebkong, an important centre for the Nyingma school of Buddhism, and one of the great centres of Tibetan 'thanka' painting; and then to the great monastic complex of Labrang. The large 'Yellow Hat' monastery, with its golden rooves and huge Thanka Wall is regarded by many today as one of the most important active monasteries on the entire Tibetan Plateau. From the historic city of Lanzhou, where we can see the Yellow River for the last time, we exit to Hong Kong and relax in the luxury of a really first class hotel.
