Standing upon the borders of China, Afghanistan, Tajikistan and Pakistan, the strategically important Pamir Mountains are upheld by the Pamir Plateau uplift. Known in Persian as the 'Bam -- i -- Dunya' or Roof of the World, its rugged terrain is studded with some of Asia's highest peaks.

Among these, looming high over the brooding waters of the Karakul Lake is the solitary form of the triple-peaked Muztaghata(7546m.), `the Father of Ice Mountains'. Indeed as its Turkic name implies the mountain is one huge glacial riven monolith, its heights revered in local Kirgiz mythology as a paradisic garden, its image is a truly awe inspiring sight.

Twenty kilometers to the north-east appears the domed peak of Mt. Kongur(7719m.) and her sister peak Kongur Tiube(7579m.). Together these giants form a cradle like arc nursing the glacial water of Karakul(3245m.), and the grassland yurts of the plateau's Kirgiz tribesmen.

This route offers the trekker encounter with the raw natural energy, landscape, people and culture of this majestic mountainous region. Entering China from Pakistan, the delightful Hunza Valley, foreboding peaks of the Karakorum and Tajik speaking districts of the plateau are crossed to commence our trek at the foot of the Ice Mountain Father. The northern base of the mountain and eastern perimeter of the lake are traversed to reach the Kongur massif. Trekking along the mouths of her many glaciers, we emerge onto wild flower covered grassland to proceed by vehicle to the Silk Road oasis of Kashgar.
