Not
too far north of Urumqi, capital of China's Xinjiang Province, lies the heart of the Asian
Continent - the point on the Eurasian land mass furthest from the sea. Here, where the
magnificent Tian Shan Mountains dissect the Tarim Basin from the Zhungar Basin in the
north, live many differing peoples with their own unique cultures and customs. We find
Kazaks, Tatars, and Dahours; Mongols , from both the Turgut and Chahra tribes, as well as
Russians, Uzbeks, Xibos, and Tuvans - not to mention the Uygurs,Huis, and even the odd
Tibetan!
We begin our fascinating journey
in Urumqi from where we head north into the Bogda Mountains and the ancestral homelands of
the Kazak nomads around Lake Tianchi. We fly north to Altai in the Golden Mountains where
we encounter the Naiman Kazaks before driving west through the oil town of Karamay to
Tacheng ,where live the Manchurian speaking Dahours .We cross the dry Zhungar basin and
grassy steppe dotted with Mongol and Kazak yurts, and stop for the night by the shores of
the magnificent Sayram Lake, where the Chahra Mongols make their home. At Ili we'll visit
the Xibo people renowned for their archery and at the 'Big dragon Pool' we'll relax for a
whole day among the forested slopes of the Narat Range and the hospitality of the Turgut
Mongols. Finally we descend into the oases of the Taklamakan Desert, where we spend time
among the Uygurs, Xinjiang's most well known minority people.
