The perfect introduction to this ancient trade route takes us through all the major oases of China's great western expanse. After a brief stay in Peking we go straight to Xian, ancient capital of Imperial China and the original starting point for the caravans that once set out for Europe and the Middle East. At Lanzhou we cross the great Yellow River and head up the Hexi Corridor towards the ancient city of Wuwei and Jiayuguan where the Great Wall gives way to the desert, and where the predominantly Han culture of the East is slowly replaced by the Grand Islamic traditions first of the Hui people, and then of the turkic speaking Uygurs and Kazaks.

At the incredible cave site of Dunhuang we stop for a full two days so that we not only have enough time to fully explore the Buddhist caves which are generally held to be one of China's greatest cultural attractions, but we can also spend some time exploring the surrounding desert by camel. This is a unique chance for those who want to get a genuine feel for the silk road without sacrificing the comfort of a good hotel.

We continue westwards, through the Flaming Mountains and the enchanting oasis of Turfan to Urumqi - a fascinating melting pot of Uygur and Han cultures, and then fly over the Taklamakan desert to Kashgar where the largest bazaar in Central Asia is held every Sunday.
