The great
diversity of habitats including forests, grasslands, deserts and wetlands, together with
its large size, creates China's great biological diversity. China is the third richest
country in the world in terms of native species - remarkable for a largely temperate land
mass. In terms of birds, this richness manifests itself in over 1,300 species recorded
throughout the country, including some of the most spectacular and fascinating birds in
the world.
Our first stop is at Hong Kong Park where 150 species of birds can be seen.
Then the Mai Po Marshes, the premier birding site in Hong Kong, including 58 species of
regularly occurring wetland-dependent birds and raptors. The most spectacular
concentrations of shorebirds and other waterbirds are to be seen in front of the boardwalk
hides.
We fly north to Sichuan province, which since the third century has been
known as 'Heaven on Earth' in celebration of its fertile land and magnificent scenery. The
habitat varies greatly with high forested valleys at Wolong (1900-4480m) and low altitude
forests at Qingchen Shan (1000-1800m) and Du Fu's Cottage (500m), where about 300 species
may be seen, including 17 raptors, 14 galliforms, 4 accentors, over 30 thrushes, 14
warblers, 13 tits, 14 corvids and 25 finches.
Further north to Beidaihe, the coast or resort, 280km east of Beijing. This
is one of the best sites in the world for observing bird migration. Spring migration peaks
in May when interesting species often include Rufous-bellied Woodpecker, Pechora Pipit,
Chinese Penduline Tit and Yellow-browed Bunting. There might be over 2,000 Pied Harriers
in a day in September. Good chance of seeing Oriental Storks and no fewer than five
species of crane in late October and early November - Common, Ped-crowned, Siberian,
Hooded and White-naped, as well as the impressive Great Bustard.
