The Great Wall, the only man-made structure visible from the moon, has captured the imagination of countless people throughout its long history. It is no doubt one of the wonders of the world.

The wall was built in a piecemeal fashion over a long period, staring in the 15th century BC, as a means of defense against raids from northern nomadic tribes. When the empire was unified under Qinshi Huangdi in 221BC, a continuous line of fortifications was ordered to be constructed by joining up the old walls.

Historical texts record as many as 300,000 men working for ten years on the construction of a single section of the wall.

Built partly of earth faced with brick and partly of masonry, the Great Wall stretches for 4,000 kilometres with ramparts punctuated by watch towers, from which the smoke signals were sent to capital of Xi'an by sentries posted at strategic points.

Our journey will start in Beijing, capital of China for most of the past seven centuries, which today lies at the heart of a nation of more than a billion people. From here we fly to Xi'an, famous for the Terracotta Army (recognized by the World's Heritage organization), which dates back two thousand years to the Qin Dynasty. Through the city's magnificent archaeological and historic sights which give us a clear picture of the first Emperor: Qinshihuang. We return back to Beijing for the three days walking on the Great Wall, providing perhaps the most unusual experience of life time - "Not a real hero until one reaches the Great Wall" according to a famous Chinese saying.
