This unusual programme takes us in the space of just eighteen days, from the
humming of China's great modern cities - Beijing and Shanghai, to the peace and
tranquility of the great monastic complex of Labrang and the history of both Xi'an and
Longmen.
We call it the 'Panorama' because
on this tour the group will gain a closer understanding of the influences that have shaped
China, as well as the diverse geography that goes into its making.
From the majesty of the Yellow
River we climb up onto the edge of the Tibetan Plateau and spend two nights in the
delightful ex-summer palace at Labrang Monastery. This vast gold roofed monastery is the
stronghold of the Yellow Hats, and we will have more than enough time here to witness
something of the gentle ways of its fascinating people.
Our journey continues to the
ancient capital of Xi'an and then by train to the ancient Buddhist site of Longmen near
Luoyang. After a good nights rest we journey to Shaolin, the 5th century monastery whose
fame stems from its earliest monks who perfected the art of Kung Fu.
At the charming gardened city of
Suzhou we can explore the history of silk making and relax in beautiful private parks
before we are rushed once again into the 20th century and the dynamism of China's largest
city - Shanghai.
We end our journey with a
relaxing cruise down the Li River amidst the fairytale landscape of Guilin and then spend
our last night in Guangzhou before boarding the express train to Hong Kong.
