This
exciting tour is aimed at those who have either already visited China once, or for those
who want to dig a little deeper into the country's fascinating backstreets.
After completing our tour of
Xi'an we take a step back in time to the spectacular caves of Longmen, generally held to
be one of China's most important Buddhist sites. From here we drive to the 5th century
Shaolin Monastery - crucible of the martial arts where Bhoddhidarma spent nine years in
meditation after arriving from India.
We drive on to Kaifeng, a quiet
provincial town with a 3000 year history, and then depart by night train to the Silk
centre of Suzhou on the banks of the Grand Canal. After visiting the city's fine private
gardens we step back into the 20th century and the bustle of Shanghai.
From the Yangtse Basin we fly
right across China to the charming city of Chengdu, famed for its fine tea houses and
excellent cuisine. and then head south to Kunming, capital of the colourful province of
Yunnan.
For many, our trip to Dali, the ancestral home of
the Bai People, will be a highlight of this diverse tour. Situated on the Banks of the
beautiful Lake Erhai, the Kingdom of Dali dates back to the 9th century, when it was the
seat of a powerful line of Bai Rulers. The colourful Bai still comprise the majority of
the regions inhabitants and we will have ample time to mingle with them as we stroll among
their fishing boats and hunt for bargains in the colourful markets.
