| The Silk Road, like the
Forbidden City and the Great Wall, is one of those names which epitomizes the mystery of
China, and her illustrious past. Unlike our other programmes along this ancient trade
route (see our 'West China' manual), this panoramic journey focuses not only on the most
important oases of the great Western Desert, but also takes us to the Classic sites of
Imperial China. After a brief stay in
Peking we go straight to Urumqi, capital of Xinjiang Province, and staging post for
Heavenly Lake, the ancestral home of the Kazak nomads high in the Tian Shan Mountains.
After a relaxing day at the lake we fly from Urumqi over the Taklamakan desert to Kashgar
where the turkik speaking Uygurs hold the largest bazaar in Central Asia every Sunday.
After returning to the Uygur capital we drive
south through the Flaming Mountains to the enchanting oasis of Turfan, and then fly to the
incredible cave site of Dunhuang to explore the Buddhist caves which are generally held to
be one of China's greatest cultural attractions.
We return to Xi'an, ancient capital of Imperial
China and the original starting point for the caravans that once set out for Europe and
the Middle East., and then make a classic tour through eastern and southern China. The
contrast with the dryness of the previous week rarely goes unnoticed, and one is left at
the end of the tour with the impression that China has much more to offer than we ever
imagined.
