For many, a trip to China must include a cruise down that most famous of Chinese natural wonders - the Yangtse River. This circuit therefore has been designed to combine the popular stops of Beijing, Xi'an, Shanghai, Guilin, and Guangzhou, with a very relaxed cruise along the great waterway.

With the exception of Suzhou which is not visited in this programme, we more or less follow the same route as our CLG1, but by placing the cruise midway in an otherwise tight schedule, we can create a feeling of calm and relaxation.

This particular cruise follows the more favoured down-stream route from the ancient hilled city of Chongqing built on the banks of the Yangtse in the heart of Sichuan - China's traditional rice bowl. Our course takes us to the fascinating town of Wanxian where porters vie with each other to help us up the steep steps and into the winding streets of this old silk centre, where every night the colourfull rattan market is held. After a night at anchor, we continue on our way in the early hours to sail through the famed three gorges in daylight.

Passing through the Windbox or Qutang Gorge, with its 1200 metre high peaks and impressive towpaths, we come to Wushan and then Wu Xia, the Witches Gorge, where the walls are so steep that it is said the sun never penetrates! The third and final gorge of Xiling zigzags for nearly 80 km to the old town of Yichang , where we can once again disembark and mingle with the riverside life, before moving on to the modern city of Wuhan where we once again pick up the classic trail.
