This is an interesting combination of our Dali Lijiang Loop and Yunnan's second most popular destination, the tropical region, of Xishuangbanna on the Burmese border.

From Kunming we fly straight down to Jinghong where the colourful Water Splashing festival is held each year. We spend three nights here to explore the surrounding valleys and villages of the friendly Dai people. Jinghong is very much the centre of the region and we will return there each evening as it offers the best accommodation available. When we do this we are able to avoid unnecessary backtracking by taking the boat for example, down the Mekong to Menghan - the 'Olive Plain' , a picturesque village on the banks of the big river set in the shade of large trees, with its many traditional Dai houses on stilts, its colorful peoples, and its busy markets.

From the temples and pagodas of this remote border region we head north into the Yangtze river system, stopping on the way to relax in Dali on the shores of Erhai Lake. We make our loop through the fascinating Tibetan and Naxi valleys of Lijiang towards Jinjiang, and then head up to Chengdu from where we will make another excursion into the Tibetan borderlands of Eastern Sichuan and the spectacular little known glacial Lake of Mugetso.
