This
programme is designed to explore the least known of the regions's minority
people. It
could easily be combined with other circuits, the most obvious choice being the Bai people
of Dali. By driving on to Baoshan and Mangshi from Dali we would avoid the long return
trip to Kunming that occurs with most tours to Dali, and then fly back from Mangshi or
Baoshan.
The far western corner of Yunnan
is a region almost entirely unknown to foreigners. The now famous 'Burma Road' passed this
way during WW2, and not since then have the local tribes been exposed to outsiders. The
area known as the 'Dehong' region, reaches far into Burma and is home of two minority
groups, the Jingpo and Dai. The Dehong Dai are famed for their good looks, while their
historical seat of 'Ruili' is seen by some as one of the most pleasantly exotic places in
Yunnan.
After relaxing in Kunming, the
second part of the programme takes in part of neigbouring Guizhou province which is just
starting to become popular with foreigners. Our particular circuit follows the route from
Guiyang, the provincial capital, to Guilin., and the magical landscapes of the Li River.
Along the way we meet with the Miao, the Dong , the Yi, and the Zhuang.people. During our
stay with them we can expect to wander through their villages , appreciate their fine
tradition of craftmaking, and share their food .
