Together with Lake Erhai, the charming Bai town of Dali has become one of South West China's most popular destinations. Groups generally make the nine hour drive out there from Kunming on a Saturday or Sunday. They arrive in time for the colourful Monday market at the nearby village of Shaping and then return either the following day, or the day after. For those who wish to travel further north to Lijiang, the problem of distance is even greater, and consequently one often finds that there are barely enough days at the actual destination to really enjoy oneself after what feels like a very long trip.

Although we do offer this arrangement to those who want it, we prefer to avoid any backtracking by taking in all the major sites on a long loop which takes us from Chengdu in Sichuan Province, to Kunming, the capital of Yunnan Province. This routing leaves us enough time to really appreciate the fascinating mountain people who populate the lush valleys of the Upper Yangtze, as well as the awesome landscapes through which we travel. It also means that we can reach some of the less frequented sites such as the sacred Yulong Shue Shan (Jade Dragon Peak), and the breathtaking Tiger Leaping Gorge through which the Yangtze foams and roars on her way down to the plains.
